Ricky Martin Considers His Choice to Reveal His Sexual Orientation to the World.

Martin, who came out in 2010, says that he was discouraged from coming out by the team who represented him as a singer at the time, in an interview with Andy Cohen.

According to Ricky Martin, one of the people that pushed him to come out as gay was his psychologist father.

“What are you going to teach your children—lying?” he asked. As he promoted his new Apple TV+ series, “Palm Royale,” father-of-four Martin said to Andy Cohen on SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live,” “You got to be open.”

“I wish to support you. How are we going to accomplish this? Martin remembered his dad saying this. “All right, dad, I’m working on it,” I replied. Please give me a moment. I have no idea how. I’m not sure if it’s via an interview. Whether or not to compose a letter and tweet it is up in the air. I’m not sure. Please give me a moment. It will materialize.

In 2010, Martin—now fifty-two—came out as gay in a post on his website. After what he called “years in silence and reflection,” he stated that the birth of his first two boys, whom he welcomed in 2008 with the aid of a surrogate, and writing his memoirs pushed him to come out. This was published at the time by The Guardian.

He revealed to Cohen—who is also out gay—that he was discouraged from coming out at the time by the group that represented him as a musician.

“Your career is going to end with this. Avoid it. It is not necessary for you to. Why? Give up. It is not required to be shared. Everyone in your vicinity is aware. It’s not necessary to inform everyone. Your family and friends are aware. Why is it necessary for you to speak about it while standing in front of the camera? Martin remembered that his advisors—whom he did not identify—had advised him. They were unaware of its significance. I can see it now.

When Martin, who became well-known at the age of twelve when he joined the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo, came out to his mother for the first time at the age of eighteen, he told Cohen that she was worried because “people out there are really cruel.” It “took her a minute to accept it.” He claimed that when he came out to the public more than twenty years later, he made sure his mother was traveling by plane to see him.

Martin said on his website that coming out “felt amazing.”

Martin remarked, “I wish I could come out 20 times.” Naturally, I broke down in tears. You know, after hitting send, I thought, “Oh, that’s it?” Paco, my assistant of course, was standing next to me when I said, “I think I need a hug.”

In 2018, Martin declared his marriage to painter Jwan Yosef the year before. Lucia Martin-Yosef and Renn Martin-Yosef, the couple’s two children, were born in 2018 and 2019, respectively. The pair declared their intention to dissolve their marriage in July 2023.
